NZ Buns for Korea:  North Asia CAPE Buyers’ Tour (November 2019)

On 25-27 November 2019 the North Asia CAPE (Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence) hosted two buyers from Shinsegae Korea.  They were Michael Kim – General Manager of Global Sourcing Division and Emily Choi – Bakery Ingredients Buyer.  They were principally interested in dairy products and bakery goods (particularly frozen).  While in NZ they visited five companies and inspected their factories.  Each visit was 2-3 hours long.  Participating NZ companies were Abe’s Bagels, Mrs. Higgins, Rangiora Bakery, Silverfern Farms and Global Dairy Limited.  We also facilitated a mini Trade Show which allowed the participating companies approximately 20 minutes one-on-one with the buyers.  The latter could try or taste their products and give immediate feedback.  The companies were Wahiki Ice-cream, Round Pizza, Tasman Bay, Little Beauties, Ecostore, Denhealth, Shore Mariner, and Florentines.

In addition to this company engagement, NZTE hosted the buyers for an evening networking event in Auckland.  The two buyers presented on the Korean markets to NZTE Customer Managers – approximately 45 people attended.

The visit produced high level engagement and resulted in a number of potential deals.  Rangiora Bakery was a standout, and they have subsequently sent samples of three of their products to Korea.  Round Pizza report they benefited greatly from the trade show feedback.  The NA CAPE plans several further Korean Buyers’ Tours in 2020.
